Spine surgery isn't always the answer.

And when it is, it isn't one-size-fits-all.

Back and neck problems can be complicated. An MRI is part of the picture, but it isn't the whole picture.

Dr. Perrone considers your symptoms, exam, imaging, what you've already tried, and what you want to get back to doing.

1 — Start conservatively

Physical therapy, medication, injections or time may be the right place to begin.

2 — Consider less-invasive options

For certain conditions, endoscopic or minimally invasive surgery may offer another approach.

3 — Choose the right operation

Some problems need a more traditional or complex surgery. The goal isn't the smallest operation at all costs—it's the right treatment for the problem.

Dr Gabriel Perrone MD, Spine Surgeon Boston

Meet Dr. Perrone

Spine surgeon. Engineer at heart. Newton native.

Dr. Gabriel Perrone grew up in Newton and returned home to practice in the community that raised him.

Before medicine, he studied engineering—a background that still shapes the way he approaches spine problems: understand the mechanics, identify what's actually causing the symptoms, and find the least disruptive way to address it.

He completed orthopedic surgery residency at Tufts Medical Center and fellowship training in spine surgery at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, with training spanning minimally invasive techniques through complex spine surgery.

But being a spine surgeon doesn't mean recommending surgery to everyone who walks through the door. The goal is to understand the problem first, then talk through the options together.

Outside the office
You'll usually find Gabe with his wife and daughter, spending time in Maine or on Cape Cod, fishing, kayaking, or cooking for family and friends.

ENDOSCOPIC + MINIMALLY INVASIVE SPINE SURGERY

Advanced techniques. Broader perspective.

For appropriately selected patients, certain spine conditions may be treated using endoscopic or other minimally invasive techniques designed to limit disruption to the surrounding tissues.

Dr. Perrone received specialized spine training during his fellowship at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. But minimally invasive doesn't automatically mean better for every patient.

The best procedure is the one that appropriately addresses the problem.

That's why his approach isn't built around one technique. It's built around having options.

Recent Patient

Dr. Perrone took my mother’s back pain seriously when others had written it off as just old age for years. He did a thorough evaluation, ordered the right imaging, and discovered a compression fracture that had gone completely undetected until now. We finally have real answers and a path forward, and we are so grateful we found him.
